2. Which Granite Colour Is Best?
Choosing Granite That Fits Your Lifestyle and Aesthetic
When it comes to choosing the best granite countertop colour, there’s no one-size-fits-all answer. The right choice depends on your space, lighting, and personal style. Some homeowners prefer bright, refreshing tones, while others love rich, dramatic contrasts. At Natural Stone City, our experts can help you find a granite that not only matches your design vision but also complements your flooring, cabinetry, and décor for a perfectly balanced look.
Here are a few key factors to consider when deciding which granite colour is best for your kitchen:
Durability and Maintenance: Most granite colours are naturally durable, but darker shades tend to hide wear, water spots, and crumbs better than lighter ones.
Lighting: In rooms with limited natural light, lighter granite colours help brighten the space and make it feel larger.
Room Size: Smaller kitchens benefit from softer, neutral tones that open up the space, while large kitchens can handle bolder, darker granite for contrast.
Design Style: Think about your overall aesthetic, from rustic and cozy to sleek and contemporary, and choose granite that enhances that theme.
To make your selection easier, here are some popular granite colours based on different kitchen styles:
Bright kitchens: White Ice or Kashmir White add brightness and reflect natural light beautifully.
Cozy, warm spaces: Tan Brown or Giallo Ornamental bring warmth and a timeless charm to traditional designs.
Modern designs: Steel Grey or Black Galaxy create a sleek, sophisticated feel that pairs perfectly with minimalist or industrial décor.

4. How to Pick the Right Granite Countertop Colour for Your Kitchen
Balance, Contrast, and Lighting Are Key
Choosing the perfect granite countertop colour is more than just picking a favourite shade. It requires considering how the countertop will interact with cabinets, walls, flooring, and the overall lighting of your kitchen. Here are some practical principles to guide your decision:
Match Undertones Between Granite and Cabinets
Granite with similar undertones to your cabinetry creates a harmonious look, while contrasting undertones can make both surfaces stand out. Understanding undertones helps prevent clashing colours.Consider Room Size and Natural Light
Lighter granite colours can make smaller kitchens feel larger and more open, while darker shades add depth and richness to larger spaces. Natural light can also dramatically affect how a granite colour appears, so always view samples in your kitchen’s lighting.Use Samples Before Finalizing
Bringing home granite samples or using small swatches in the kitchen allows you to see how the colour works with your specific cabinetry, flooring, and wall colours. Testing samples is the best way to avoid surprises.Tip: Choose Cool or Warm Tones to Complement Style
Cool-toned granite, like greys and blues, suits modern and minimalist kitchens. Warm-toned granite, such as beige, gold, or brown, enhances traditional or rustic designs.
By following these guidelines, you can select a granite countertop colour that balances aesthetics, complements existing elements, and suits the overall mood of your kitchen. Taking the time to test and compare ensures your countertop will be a stunning focal point for years to come.
5. Should a Countertop Be Lighter or Darker Than the Floor?
Creating Visual Harmony Between Surfaces
Choosing the right contrast between your countertop and flooring is essential for a balanced, visually appealing kitchen. The relationship between these surfaces can either enhance the sense of space or create an overwhelming look if the tones are too similar or clash. Understanding how light and dark elements interact helps you achieve a harmonious, professional design.
Here are some simple rules to guide your choice:
Light Floors → Medium to Dark Countertops: Lighter floors benefit from a slightly darker countertop to create depth and visual interest.
Dark Floors → Light or Medium Countertops: Light countertops stand out against dark flooring, brightening the space and preventing it from feeling heavy.
Mix Patterns and Textures: For added dimension, pair solid-colour floors with patterned granite or incorporate subtle veining that complements the floor tone.
Example: Grey floors can be paired with a warm, patterned granite to add texture and richness, creating a balanced and inviting look.
By following these guidelines, you can create a kitchen that feels cohesive, well-proportioned, and visually dynamic.
6. Should the Granite Countertop Be Lighter or Darker Than the Cabinets?
Contrast Creates Depth and Interest
The relationship between your cabinets and granite countertop plays a major role in your kitchen’s overall aesthetic. Choosing the right contrast can add dimension, highlight design features, and make your kitchen feel thoughtfully designed. Dark granite paired with light cabinets or light granite with dark cabinetry can create a striking, balanced look.
Here are key considerations when deciding on the contrast:
Darker Granite with Light Cabinets: Dark countertops create a dramatic focal point against white or light-colored cabinets, making the kitchen feel sophisticated and visually grounded.
Lighter Granite with Dark Cabinets: Light granite brightens darker cabinetry and helps open up the space, preventing it from feeling heavy or closed in.
Two-Tone Kitchen Trend: Many modern kitchens use contrasting countertops and cabinetry to create a stylish, layered look, for example, a dark island with lighter perimeter cabinets.
By carefully selecting the right contrast, you can add depth, balance, and interest to your kitchen design.
7. Should the Granite Countertop Be Lighter or Darker Than the Wall Colours?
Tie Everything Together for a Cohesive Look
The colour of your walls can greatly influence how your granite countertops look in your kitchen. Coordinating undertones across walls, countertops, and cabinetry ensures a harmonious and cohesive design that feels intentional and well-balanced.
Consider these simple guidelines when choosing your granite:
Light Walls → Darker Granite Adds Richness: Dark countertops contrast beautifully with lighter walls, creating depth and a sense of warmth in the space.
Dark Walls → Lighter Granite Brightens the Space: Light granite stands out against darker wall colours, keeping the kitchen feeling open and inviting.
Test Samples Under Different Lighting: Always view granite samples in your kitchen’s natural and artificial light to see how colours and veining interact with your walls and cabinets before making a final decision.
By coordinating undertones and testing samples in your space, you can ensure your countertop, walls, and cabinetry work together seamlessly for a polished, cohesive kitchen design.

“Highly recommend. From the minute we entered the showroom and were greeted by Denisa to the installation, Natural Stone City has been top notch. Viewing the indoor showroom was great with samples on site to take with. Denisa provided us with an on the spot quote based on our plans. She was wonderful to work with making sure we got exactly what we wanted. The speed of templating to installation is unheard of - templating on Tuesday and installing on Friday. This significantly fast-tracked our renovation. The care of the people cutting the stone cannot be overlooked. We chose to use the countertop as backsplash and they went to the effort that the veins are continuous from the backsplash to the counter. The installation was perfection as well. Our very large island required a seam and it is virtually unnoticeable due to the care of the installers and the attention of the person laying out our stone for cutting. We are so incredibly pleased with our countertops. Great business, great people, and great product. Highly recommend.”
